Great Moments. Important Moments.

What are your great moments?  Is it a graduation?  The birth of a child?  Completing the Lake Placid IronMan?  A killer Karaoke performance of “Lucky Star”?  The 1.6 seconds it took Craig MacTavish to block Pavel Bure’s path on the final faceoff to secure the Stanley Cup?  The answers depend on your life story.  Great moments tend to be categorically larger and louder.  They are amazing conclusions or exciting beginnings.  There may be an actual finish line and medal.  Memories of great moments trigger wide smiles and the good type of goosebumps.

Important moments are different.  They can be subtle,…..quieter.  A few words from your dad during a routine phone call influenced a career decision.  Taking a chance on a blind date turned out well.  Placing a home in Trust years before a health issue emerged was the right thing to do.

Estate planning definitely falls under the category of important moments.  Often there is an ordinariness surrounding it.  Going to an office and signing papers feels like a routine process.  The results that emerge from intelligent estate planning can be life-changing.  A home that is protected may produce financial and living benefits that propels the next generation forward.  Maybe, a lack of school debt will allow a loved one to pursue their dream. Many important moments operate as sliding-doors situations.  A path not taken, like a failure to plan your estate, may lead to a more difficult life.  Setting up a Power of Attorney, Health Care Proxy and Living Trust is one positive path that organizes and preserves your resources and empowers your loved ones for your protection.

Important moments are often conversations leading to action.  A little initiative goes a long way.  An adult child casually mentions estate planning to a parent.  That parent, a few hours later, thinking about those words, has a short talk with a neighbor about trusts.  From there, an appointment is made and a family is on the right path.  Subtle…….quiet, but moving forward and incredibly important.

Important moments lead to great moments.  The estate planning of a parent or grandparent may be directly responsible for a child’s graduate school graduation.   A series of sound decisions may strengthen a family’s financial life allowing for its continued growth.  We know for a fact that long term health care costs can remove many thousands of dollars from a family’s bank account.  Prevention of this type of loss is the goal an elder law attorney.

We love to revisit our great moments.  Pulling up a photo or video takes you back to that exact time.  You may even experience some of the emotions tied to that event.  Great moments are reminders that life presents a few wonderful surprises to cherish.  Unless you are a Jets fan.  Joe Namath aside, the world has been cruel to you.

Your next great moment may be around the corner, but right now is an important moment.  Contact the professionals at The Feller Group, P.C. today to begin your estate planning journey.
